An EEG is most sensitive to a similarly oriented dipole layer in the gyri (ab, de, gh), less sensitive to a similarly oriented dipole layer in the sulcus (hi), and insensitive to an opposing dipole layer in sulci (bcd, efg) and to a random dipole layer (ijklm). A MEG is most sensitive to a similarly oriented dipole layer in the sulcus (hi) and much less sensitive to all others. The latest MEG sensors are smaller than the one shown. From Nunez (47).
