Acridine orange labeling of hippocampal neurons at 48 hours in culture. Acridine orange can be used histologically to detect RNA, which appears orange at 470 nm (DNA and proteins are pale green). Note somatic RNA, which extends distally into the apical dendrite and growth cone. Axonal labeling is not detected.
