A: Patients recently improved on at least 4 weeks
of antidepressant treatment had an amino acid drink with tryptophan (control
nondepletion) and an amino acid drink without tryptophan (active depletion)
administered an average of 6 days apart. The ratings before the drink were subtracted from the ratings 7
hr. after the drink in order to obtain the effect for each of the control
and active drinks. The change
plotted above is the active drink effect minus the control drink effect
(adapted from Delgado et al. - 18).
B: Patients off medication for at least 21 days
had the amino acid drinks administered and the Hamilton Ratings Scale
scores calculated as described above.
